  6.     For the third time this year, the elected President of a
  7. former Soviet republic has been forced out of office by a
  8. popular uprising. Rebel militiamen in Dushanbe, capital of
  9. Tajikistan, seized President Rakhmon Nabiyev as he drove to the
  10. airport and forced him at gunpoint to sign a formal resignation.
  11. Nabiyev, the longtime communist boss of Tajikistan, won almost
  12. 60% of the vote in a presidential election last November.
  13. Fighting broke out between Nabiyev's supporters and his rivals,
  14. a coalition of democratic and Islamic groups, and in recent
  15. weeks the clashes turned into civil war.
